Thi9s makes so much sense, no need to electrify the line:

i might have travelled on that pre upgrade, it does make sense as some routes have infrastructure unsuitable for pantograph power

re digging tunnels has been done before but it is daft expensive vs put a battery in a pantograph train and use that on the non electric bits

i think i know where they could better leccy motors though, even with the line upgrades in progress bullet train speeds on tracks with shapes for trains from the 1830's to about 1900 might be a bit tricky

if i get to try it, i will report back

As is, they are only expecting to use the battery in stations, so not ideal, although a great deal better than having a diesel engine sat outside your window (class stopped on one occasion as too much noise for us to hear lecturer). Far better to use, as hoped, on electric lines as cover for tunnels and junctions.

back to trains, they work best if the traction is spread along the length of the train

leccy is ideal, as an intercity pulls around the 700hp range, a collection of those neat 6 phase motors, using smaller ones in each piece of rolling stock might work a treat

New larger construction equipment being electrified. Descriptions seem pretty clear eyed about battery limitations and charging times needed. Still useful. New battery tech will make machines like that much more useful.

so long as they make a noise they will be ace, knowing where they are and what they are doing by sound is a major safety issue for pedestrians (and the machine's banksmen if they are working together)on site

the full charge of machine and power unit on low tariff leccy would be fine for a one shift operation, a 27/7 site would need fast chargers and/or a lot of power bank units

i see no reason that large, permanent, 24/7 sites such as a port or large industrial site could not arrange low tariff leccy on site, they need some big wires so might as well stick panels on the roof of all the buildings and have short big wires and centralized power hubs with or without battery buffering for charging
low cost grid at night and low cost homemade for daytime* or lowcost at night and have big power bank batteries on site

pv is the easiest in places like ports and factories, but other options may be available depending on the site. two tides in and out of a "dam" or using tidal flow turbine harvest would provide reliable cheap leccy for many ports

It shouldn't be a problem dpack...as on sites machines already have to have flashing lights and beeping when moving.

much as i like EV they are a bit stealthy compared to roaring ice

I wonder if the beeping can be at lower decibel level once a sufficient amount of our works is electrified and therefore much quieter.

The stealthiness is also a benefit for quality of life, so the obnoxious loud safety beepers probably won't always need to be quite so obnoxiously loud

There is no limit to the sound they can make. Our hybrid at certain speeds in electric mode sounds like a milk float (sadly minus the rattling bottles) but any other sound could be used. On a building site it has to be loud enough to be heard above other noises but not so noisy that it is annoying to those outside- and it needs something that can't be turned off. When they were building next to us the back window of the excavator was so dirty they couldn't see when they reversed into our telephone line. As my son ranted at the driver; if your mate had been behind you you would have run him over.

EV for under £15,000.

An VW ID3 can be had with just 7 miles on the clock for £22,000

But we are still being told price parity is 2027!

battery tech does seem to be developing fast in many directions

some will turn out to be affordable and effective

we are well beyond the range/on fire poopooing from the ice firms

at a guess different types of vehicle will be best powered by a battery suitable for them
ie a medium priced car needs a few hundred miles and no more than 100hp at peak "sporty" load, mostly 20/30 hp is more than enough for "normal" driving
a opencast tipper truck needs massive hp and fast or battery pack swapping charging

very different battery needs

I'm looking at the moment at the price of 2020 Nissan Leafs, they seem to be going for £7,500.
That's some pretty tragic depreciation, but there are loads of people where buying at that price would pay back in a couple of years compared to diesel.
There's some number where if you are commuting more than that number a day then it's crazy not to be running an EV now if you can charge at home.
It is probably lower than 50 miles a day now.
