We have recently acquired 3 chickens. To make life simpler, we have converted a stable, given them plastic nesting boxes mounted on the wall, an auto pop hole and plastic omelette perches, huge feeder & auto-drinker outside - pretty much automates our chicken keeping so that it doesn't matter if we are not here.
I have named them as follows:
The Speckledy: Dotty
The Chalk-hill Blue (looks like an Aracauna cross): Goldie
The Columbian Blacktail: Molly (yes it was intentional).
it is worth cleaning the slides of the pop hole regularly to ensure it does not stick half open and if it is battery powered make sure you replace them before they get flat
my treadle feeder was ace but it did tend to get food under the treadle which needed sweeping out now and again for hygiene and so as it still opened the hopper door when they step on it.

Absolutely.
Fortunately, the auto opener has the option of battery or USB to the mains.
quite right you can't just get one , ostriches are are flock critters, an ostrich would be cruel
umm , im not sure about the other two but even if they are a bit like hamsters they will wan't a "friend" now and again to help provide a 12 covers omelette and a jam pot or a roast for a village.

I believe in always getting a minimum of 3....but the discussion always starts with 'shall we get a.....'
