What was the temp and was the mix too wet? What you need is Bugs to be here, I'm eating her soda bread now for lunch.

Sounds to me like the dough was too wet.

It isn't about measuring the liquid, it's more about getting the consistency right. For soda bread you want a stiff, every so slightly sticky dough.

Hold down alt and type 0176 to get °. Do take a look at the bread link.

I'm in the dough is too wet camp (are you sure about your oven, the setting may have been right, but could the oven have had a funny turn - have you baked anything else in the last couple of days?)?

Remember flour can be very variable and even though you followed the recipe, you might still have wound up with too much liquid. How did the mix look? It should be easy to handle, soft and barely sticky (ooh I've come over all Carry On again), so you use a little flour to shape it.

I don't know what the quantities are in Seymour, but some recipes have you using a pound of flour for one loaf, which would take *at least* 45 minutes to cook.

I did think it was rather sticky but lacking experience took it as "it'll work,recipe cant be wrong!"

I'll have another go (should that be goo.....)

Hi Bugs,

Yes I did have another go. Added the liquid slowly until it "seemed" right and wahey !! The end result didnt hang around long enough for a photo

Apologies for not getting back on here sooner - been busy clearing the attic and we all know how much stuff gathers up there!!

Oh yes indeed. My granny always told me off for eating warm bread as it would " make you very poorly".

Well, poorly it is then, and you would not believe the mess the melting butter made...

then again, perhaps you would.....
