I chit parsnip seed on damp toilet paper, then sow in loo roll middles.
They seem to germinate quicker this way,and at least when you put them out you don't have gaps in the row

oh dear

is it too late to plant roots? maybe not

a couple of tips

if you are growing for roots make sure the soil is deep, open and friable
the other stuff is fairly specific for each type of root

next rotation i might go for runner beans on top of holes full of good manure

ps i kill lots of seeds , cuttings , plants etc .
never worry about it plant something new,
if you have bare earth for even a month grow a green mulch crop and either turn it in and plant or cut for mulch elsewhere and dig the root bits in then plant the new stuff.

if beans and manure is too much to do at short notice at this time of year a 200 gm bag of coriander seed would give plenty of kitchen stuff and /or ace mulch in 4 to 6 weeks or so .
that would leave the bed ready for a late summer sown crop to be harvested in winter /spring

I hope it isn't too late for roots, as I haven't got mine in yet. A combination of replacing the raised beds and time. No, not sure what that is Sgt. Colon, but definitely not a parsnip. Don't worry, my root veg. often fail. Gzs method is a good one, but I have even had failures with the loo roll method.

Thank you very much everyone.

I'll get those pulled out and try GZ's method as I'd like some parsnips if i can.

DPack, that's for the tip on the green manure, I have a few bits of beds that have nothing in so I'll get some seeds thrown down.

there are quite a few green manures but at this time of year coriander does well and is quick enough to smother weeds if you can plant it into soaked soil and water it well for a month or so if required

what is the water situation on the allotments?

if you have to use collected water and hope for rain it makes things a bit more complex

the slow version of green manure/fallow bed is less water dependant

We have mains water down at the allotment DPack and I have a 200L water butt that is nearly full, so water isn't an issue there.

I've already got some green manure seeds that I bought at the back end of last year in the hope of getting them in but never did. So I'll use those.

A very nice man on the allotment have given me some lime and said to pop a bit around the bottom of my sprouts as they like it. My question is, how often should I be putting some around the sprouts and also should I do the same for my cabbages?

Thanks

iirc a bit around the plants now should be enough with your naturally neutral soil

yes to cabbages as well

the usual way is to prep the planting bed and then rake in some lime before planting

Don't follow the cabbages and sprouts with potatoes, general veg for one to two seasons before you put in potatoes. Then lime on for the next cabbages and sprouts and all the other brassicas if you need it. Potatoes don't like lime. As dpack says you shouldn't need lime as you are ph neutral. I'm preaching-sorry, but lime upsets potatoes.

From what I see you are doing very well, and you will notice how much better the taste than the shop/super market offerings, picking to eat for that day is a great feeling.

Thanks for the advice Greg. You're not preaching just helping

Yes, I am looking forward to going and picking what we need, when we need it.
