If you are in a warmish, wet-ish, area then your beans will grow to the sky. For runner beans I was usually 7ft poles above ground and well in the ground for security-about 18 inches, but I have my own hazel to cut. I have grown runners, 12 plants, in a dust bin half full of manure and some soil on top-about 8 inches, standing on an old children's netball stand my neighbour threw out. I secured the bean sticks on the net holder at the top, about 6ft. high, with the sticks going higher. An idea if you haven't got a lot of room to spare as the yield was good for such a small foot print, but more depth of manure under them and a fair amount of watering needed. I didn't bother with holes in the base but it was luck not judgment!

I used the twiggy bits that came off the tops of the bean sticks for my peas which I only grew once-I got something wrong, but don't know what!

Thank you DPack and Greg.

MR, thanks for that link. I've had a look and the nearest to me is up in Kendal, so what I'll do is I'll get in touch with them and go and pick some up the next time I go up to the hotel.

Glad it was helpful. Make sure you order them as we have got to the end of the cutting season now, and they will not be getting any more this spring. I would phone or e-mail and let them know what you want and when you are likely to pick them up.

I've finally done my soil testing and it's come back at 7 on the ph scale, which according to the little instruction thing is good. So I'm quite please with that.

that is good as it means crop rotation with a small input can give the right ph for the next crop.

a bit of a nudge from 7 is far better than trying to get 7 and then nudge it.

for the most part don't worry about it for now as most things will be ok on that.

weeds n water n food etc are plenty to be getting on with

pH7 is exactly neutral, so that is good. You should be able to grow most things at that.

You seem to have it under control. Good start to the year with a new allotment.

Thanks guys

Apparently on just the other side of that fence there is Japanese knotweed. It was reported to the council 2 years ago and they haven't done anything about it yet.

As long as it stays there. If you see any in your allotment, if the stem is thick enough, cut it off, use a wire to break the internal compartments and pour neat roundup down the stem. Otherwise spray the leaves with roundup as soon as you see them.
