We are running a series of scythe courses at Dyfed Permaculture Farm Trust again this year,

Courses include Beginners scythe course to get you going with the essential smallholders tool, a Peening and Sharpening Workshop to get your blade in tip-top condtion and an Intensive Weekend Scythe course to stretch those with a bit of experience, or for the adventurous beginner! See www.scythecymru.wordpress.com for more information, or email me on scythecymru@yahoo.co.uk

All course are led by experienced mower and scythe teacher Philip Batten.Philip was taught to scythe by the renowned scythe master Peter Vido at the first West Country Scythe Festival. He went on to win medals for the quality of his mowing and now teaches at the festival as well as at the Trust.

That looks really interesting. I'm going to try to persuade hubby that learning to scythe would be a good idea.

With the exception of grabbing a sneaky 40 winks with the piglets in their ark, I always thought that scything was the most soothing and satisfying smallholding "management" task.

Should be good - Phil Batten's an excellent tutor and mower.

Thanks for the positive comment Gil! Phil loves scything. We sometimes wonder what we would do without one - barely a day goes by in the spring/summer (and autumn!) with out the scythe coming out to carry out one task or another, either in the garden or the hay field!
