The pit last night.

Today I'm tron between the demolition job and the suspected bad news on rot under the top deck. I'm going to rationalise that putting off the top deck for three weeks until I get delivery of posts and postcrete makes more sense than opening up a hole for people to fall into and being tempted to bodge things.

So where two joists should be in agreement on level, they seem to be more than a little in dispute!

Going to be an interesting question between practicality and conservation on these joists, the last lot I sawed off as there was no room to do otherwise. As I'm keen to get the raised beds in to retain the soil in front of the new shed I expect I will again be a bit wasteful.

if it is used and wonky pull it out, retain any timber that is ok and do the replacement stuff well when you put something it its place

tis nice so far, no point in spoiling the run.

it is not wasteful to discard/reuse carp.

That night time picture looks lovely. May we see the same view in daylight please. I think one of your joists has a bent end.

Almost the same angle, in for foreground almost obscured in the long brick BBQ area with a gas BBQ on the right, the tops of the other sections come off to reveal charcoal grills. At the back is the waterfall I build last year, thanks Nick for the donation of lining for that.
The dry laid brick patio, steps up to another smaller patio and the "bus stop" then onto another area of deck. That deck then has steps up to the big deck at the back of the house.
The "pit" gives both a little shelter and whilst we are not exactly overlooked anyway, it does make it totally secluded,.

That looks lovely. You have everything sorted for outdoor living there; gas and charcoal barbecue too. We use charcoal or wood outside and just a gas two burner stove inside in the woods, and don't tend to cook outside at home.

Nicely done.
Pirate's elder daughter and husband had contractors in for four weeks to do their back garden mainly...very "designer", show house feel by the pictures. But it does look as if visitors are to be impressed by the look and the ££££ not the welcome.
Whereas yours looks well done and welcoming, plants and wood and comfort

Thanks, there was and is a deliberate what you might call rustic quality to it. The dry lay brick is not what you might call clinically level for example. Its more than decent, but a brick a few mm out will not be noticed and of course being dry laid if it was out enough to be an issue its repairable. The BBQ brickwork is again just what you might expect from my first attempt at bricklaying.
I like it that way as if you have clinically perfect, any wear and tear spoils it somewhat.

This is not the gratification phase, the slow progress is partially down to shifting earth bucket by bucket from the bottom of the garden to the top.

earth uphill is always a chore but eventually it is satisfying

could you use a mechanical system for raising the mass?

slope and rope, shadoof etc?

i am pretty fond of the powered conveyor belt for digging uphill

Look closely and there's the rare sight, though not that rare today, of interlopers on the boardwalk. This is where the paint gun comes in handy

Meanwhile some posts to remove and some levelling to do.

at least they do not seem to be taking an eye test

did the folk who made your old decking leave the flake board bits and assorted bits under it?

In another feat of Herculean strength I have single handedly pulled out the posts, one of them even had traces of concrete!
