thinking of spiders

proof of principle, i need to get my angles, use the tripod, button on a wire and the macro lens
rather than hand hold the GP lens and juggle a subdued fly and not get bitten and get the snap in some part of a few seconds

the method has promise though , i will give it a couple of days to digest that one and have a go using what i have learned so far.

it may seem a bit unethical but that fly was doomed as soon as it decided to enter the house and upset the hound so at least its demise had some use, if only to a scary spider

last year i got to know one of them and even though i cooked dinner for it sometimes it it gave me some very malevolent looks

ps i have nursed fly strike and prepped meat, i am fairly ambivalent to the well-being of lucilia(down right hostile might be the analysis of any survivors when they have been a problem)

Good pictures. The picture of the young sparrow is rather lovely, and the starling very good action shot. Was sitting yesterday watching the great tits being busy feeding the young in between other jobs such as bagging charcoal, putting it in store and keeping an eye on the kiln.

Love the spider picture.

The swifts are back for their yearly visit. Lovely to see them. I'll try and get a shot but they are soooo fast.

he or she is pretty, is there a way to know boys from girls? if you are not a clarice

we seem to have 2 but gendering them is beyond me.

Very good shot. No idea. Same with robins, but they seem to know the difference, which is the important thing.

Great tits were working like mad yesterday feeding young. Son took a number of photos, but haven't seen them yet. He should have got some fairly good ones with any luck. Somewhat disconcerting to be buzzed by a great tit in a hurry to feed young shooting past your head.

i have just trimmed my bush, shhhh, to have a better set of angles and light.

this might be wrong but it seemed right:
they are wild but they are also domestic as i feed them and concentrate them in one place
a few were showing signs of being a bit itchy in a mite sort of style
they now have a dust bath of dry compost and diatomic earth same as i would do for chooks

a splash in the water is fine for sorting feathers but dust is the thing for vermin.

i recon that is acceptable interference with nature especially as i am scratching writing this

According to Wikipedia the boys have longer and looser neck feathers, used in display. The girls' neck feathers are shorter and more pointed. You may need to be a Starling to appreciate these differences.

bird town news

the boys do seem symmetrical re eye make up
they still have the same marks as a few months ago
i recon i could tell name half a dozen(4 have names)either by naked eyeball or with glass(bins might be handy for real time obs)

eye markings for boys could be a very useful AI id tool

i need to have a chat with somebody about that.

other bird town news, loads of young sparrows, the clarices are shopping, grin has not popped round for dinner recently(i expect it to happen before long, even if their local area within the walls has been human light and street pigeon rich)
