Its 11 years since I left BT but the figure of 5.8 km of 0.5mm diam copper sticks in my mind for bb to work but obviously things have moved on. I'm pretty sure you don't get anything like the losses on fibre compared to copper so I wouldn't dismiss it. I think BT can check what will work before you buy.

According to BT the cabinet is "fibre enabled" but there's no current plan to bring fibre down to us. How do I get hold of a knowledgable human at BT with whom to discuss this?

I wouldn't be that bothered but our bb is absolutely dire, we are lucky to get 1.5mb dl speed, 2 miles from the middle of Billericay.

Report a fault. When the engineer turns up to pole the cabinet about ask him. The guys on the ground round here know the hardware very well.

I would think they would use your existing copper feed from the cab. To get info on the tech side of things you would do best to ask an BT open world engineer in the street as they hopefully know the local area.

If they don't find a fault or its in customers own wiring BT charge £125 for the first 30 mins!!

Yeah they do. Round here the automated fault detection system finds a fault every time I fire it up. They've 'fixed' it six times in the last two months. And I've been away four weeks.
