If you want to sell them to a butcher then ferrets and nets is the way to go IMHO. Definitely more profitable than rifle or shotgun.

Thats excellent, but I wasn't born an expert, and had to learn along the way, including a few woundings. Who hasn't?

I know, it was only a joke. To be honest I wouldn't shoot hares over here, the population has been in decline but is increasing rapidly, I don't know if that is down to the temporary ban on coursing that was introduced or favourable breeding conditions though.

Interesting. I've only seen one in six months or so. I've heard of a brain disease in hares, the most obvious symptom of which is that they cease to be afraid of people. Not found this yet myself, though.

I think the original post was "12 Bore, how did you get on with hitting something moving". The boastfull answer is, I've always been a great gun 1:1 on high crossing Pheasants.

The truth is I was rubbish (I mean rubbish) on anything but targets moving directly away or directly over me slowly.

Crossing targets I missed for 20 years. Why? Simple, I didn't understand the Physics of what was going on. By bringing the shotgun up to a target quicky you automatically generate the LEAD you NEED to hit a slowish moving target. You THINK you are pressing the trigger ON the target, but because of the SWING of the gun you are actually shooting in FRONT of it. That is why this 'method' is called "swing through". [ok no more capital letters]

But, like me, you will not get any better than that. i.e. Rubbish.

I only became so-so at the shotgun once I learned "The Method". This is the recommended way of shooting by the CPSA (Clay Pigeon Shooting Association), check out their site for more info, and it works, believe me. But you will also need lessons from a good instructor, but it's worth it.

After all that waffle, the Laymen want to know how people miss a moving target with a 12 bore? Do you want to know?

Ok, I'll tell you, people ALWAYS shoot BEHIND a moving target.

How much? Ok, for a flying target the size of a 6" saucer moving Right to Left 30 metres from you, going as quickly as a crow can fly without undue effort, how much lead? Go on, how much? Guess.

About 15ft of lead if you keep the gun moving when you pull the trigger, if you stop to pull the trigget, make it 25ft of lead. Even after telling you you will miss it behind (if your like me, daft, you'll give it 3ft lead and refuse to believe you will miss, so pull the trigger. Miss. Then think you missed it in front. and reduce your lead for the next clay.

To be good with a shotgun you need a GOOD instructor and LOTS of practice on clays. Have fun.

Anyone remember those training cartridges that had phosporous in them? Tru tracer or something.

Trouble with the tracer rounds is that the phosphorous doesn't travel with the shot very well - you get a rough idea but it's not ideal.
You can often see the shot string travelling through the air, particularly on an overcast day. Get someone to crouch behind you when you're practising on some clays and chances are they'll be able to see where your shot's going. They don't have to be an expert instructor - the keen eyes of a nine-year-old have helped me out before when I kept missing left-to-right crossers. Turned out I was dropping my shoulder and missing under and behind.

I'm not sure shotgun tracers are for tracing shot trajectory. Are tracer shells not just for putting up a flare? i.e. here I am, land the rescue chopper here...
