Have you all seen them? Went up today with 3 of our gilts. Seemed to be lots of pigs owned by lots of very dogy looking people trying to make a quick buck t christmas time, they looked very poor pigs that had been underfed, not cleaned out and limping. Really felt sorry for the pigs. Even the slaughterman was in shock. Animal welfare werent really able to do anything as they were "fit for slaughter" technically. Any of you seen this?

Thats awful, I hadnt really considered that it would be worse at this time ofyear but of course I can see that it might happen. Can't the abbatoirs help with reporting welfare issues to the relevant authorities?

Sally, i think the problem is that the standards are so low, that even a poorly raised animal will pass.

I wouldn't doubt it. I'll have to listen in to the farming report on the way home for the latest prices.

standards are very very low. but these were people with only 6 or so pigs, no big commercial people. I couldnt believe the people there, they were very shifty, one bloke even said to me he owned a top show winning boar, that a friend i deal with owns! Was saying how good this boar he owned was, then left very sharpish when i pointed out his mistake! Trying to steel someone elses glory to add value to his own pigs, unbelieveable. I bet alot of people will be selling "rare breed pork" this week, but how much of it is rare and reared well with care and attention?

Oh and after seeing how low ukl standards are just imagine how low they are for the 750,000 onnes of pig meat imported to the uk is that doesnt reach these standards!

If these animals were in poor condition, but still fit to enter the food chain, what confidence can we have in biosecurity measures being adhered to?

I feel sorry for anyone who feels they have to eat rubbish like that, but some people care more about quantity than quality. More's the shame.

From an animal welfare perspective its unforgivable. From the perspective that good meat matters its also unforgivable; miserable pigs taste bland and unpleasant, happy pigs taste great. Its that simple.

I find it worrying that animal welfare can't act based purely on their observations that the animals appear uncared for. Surely thats enough to enable them to investigate at least?
