We've just realised we won't be able to walk through our own footpaths with the littlun cos there's no suitable access, any ideas on gates etc suitable to put alongside stiles for wheelchair/pram access?

I've been through 'kissing gates' which have an extended bay for wheelchairs, push chairs and bikes etc.

Depends on what you want the fence for. You might get away with a cattle grid arangement, or you may have to build an extended 'kissing gate'

What will the gate be keeping in? Trees don't tend to move around much.

Keeping rabbits out, the stiles at the moment cross the brook in two places and then there's one that leads into someone else's field

There's some good stuff with diagrams on the BTCV's online handbooks - they have suppliers sections for each book too: search - wheelchair on BTCV handbooks

Actually Judith you may be right, I'm putting rabbit guards everywhere, the only problem I might have is deer, so I probably won't need any. Any drawbacks with removing the gates?

True, not many round there I don't reckon, but it'll be extremely attractive to that sort of person if they ever find out.

What height is the existing stile? If it is only about hip height, then it probably won't keep out deer, foxes, large dogs, etc, anyway, so removing it shouldn't cause problems. As Behemoth says, I think human pests would be the most likely scenario.

Not sure legally, they certainly use them all round our way so i guess they will down yuor way too

Strictly speaking, no. They are allowed on bridleway's though.
