I can just hear the wife now - 'I'm still, I'm still Jenny on the block'.

Dunno about the walls, they go up pretty quickly though.

Jema, trust me it's perfectly flat, you're just a bit skewed! (or my picture taking is)

The odd thing is, is that it all looks tiny at this stage, but you only get an idea of scale when the walls go up.

I had to remeasure it to make sure they hadn't got the dims wrong.

Women must have the same instincts as carrier pigeons, she's standing right where the sink will be.

I see that all the time round here, they take a piece of land a little larger than a postage stamp and place an impossible number of buildings on in. Size can be very deceptive.

Ours is hopefully the other way around, a large piece of land with a small house designed in sympathy with the surroundings.

Mind you, the amount of huge 'status' houses that go up around here is amazing, I can't believe that they get through planning

I read an article (wish i could remember where) arguing that the adversarial nature of our planning regime is leading to an increase in poorly designed housing. Basically any planning officer (I've spoken to a couple now) is programmed to say no straight away, whatever you ask, you then have to expend a lot of time and effort on fighting the system, obviously developers have huge experience and resources that they can throw at this. A way around it is of course to engage a planning consultant which may seem like overkill but if you get the project you want then (I hope) it's probably a small price to pay.

It's right in a way, we have paid extra to build a house that meets the character of the area (parapet walls extending above roof line, 1/2 story with dormers) whilst a simple, ugly bungalow without character would have got through a lot quicker. daft.

Looking good. You'll end up the answer to a quiz question: "Who in Ireland built a new house which was neither a bungalow nor modelled on Southfork?"

That is the neatest, tidyest, most uncluttered building site I've ever seen (and that includes some that were supposed to be finished) You must have very conciencious builders, Jonnyboy - looks like its going really well. The walls will be up in no time, and then you into choosing tiles and waiting for plumbers to turn up!
