Possibly of general interest - the upshot is that they estimate that biomass could generate 5% of our electricity now and be easily expanded.

BIOMASS TASK FORCE PUBLISHES DRAFT RECOMMENDATIONS

The Biomass Study Task Force, commissioned by Defra and DTI, today published a report with its emerging findings.
The report, which also contains draft recommendations to Government, is available online at www.defra.gov.uk/farm/acu/energy/biomass-taskforce/index.htm.
The task force, headed by Sir Ben Gill, was set up in October 2004 to help Government and industry maximise the contribution of biomass towards renewable energy targets while supporting sustainable farming, forestry and the rural economy. Its final report is due in October.
Lord Bach, Minister for Sustainable Farming, said: "The Task Force has worked hard to produce this report and I am grateful to Sir Ben and his team. I look forward to receiving the final report in the autumn."

I have recently completed the construction of a new biomass storage facility for Scottish Power at Longannet Power Station. Allegedly, due to EU grants, SP stand to make money just by taking delivery of the biomass material, let alone from burning it and generating power.

The project, however has experienced some technical diffculties, not least, the fact that the existing conveyance systems (which up until now shifted coal about the place) would appear to be unsuitable to carry the different material without seriously expensive upgrades. You'd think they would have thought of that first

In the 90's Yorkshire Water tried to get into the biomass market. We planted willow all over our sites and went into deals with farmers to plant the stuff. A generating station was built in the shadow of Drax but unfortunately didn't perform to plan. It couldn't be operated to the necessary efficiency to make money. The whole plan was ditched and the power statation was sold for £1 to a consortium who were willing to carry on trying. I don't know what came of them but we've got 15ft willow coppice every where.
